GREENSBORO – Juanita Theola Graham Washington, age 94, transitioned to her heavenly home on November 7, 2019 after an extended Illness.  She was born on April 3, 1925 in Addor, NC to Alexander and Susie Core Graham, who preceded her in death.  Juanita was the eldest of five siblings and is preceded in death by her brothers, Alexander Graham, Jr., Walter Graham and William “W.C.” Graham.

At age 19, she attended North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC and nursing school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN.

After her graduation in 1948, Juanita enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps and served in military hospitals as a Second Lieutenant during her 4 years of military service.  She was honorably discharged from the Army in 1952.  She spent the next 40 years as a Registered Nurse serving in federal hospitals in Chicago, IL, Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC.  She retired as a supervisor from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Washington, DC in 1984.

After her retirement, Juanita was ordained as a Presbyterian Elder and a member of Session.  She was a Life Member of the NAACP and a charter member of the Women’s Memorial.

Juanita leaves a legacy of love to her immediate and extended family.  She is survived by her children, Alfred Washington, Jr. (Eugenia Connor Washington), Kathryn Washington Addo and Kenneth Washington; grandchildren, Winston Looby (Ted Looby) and Frank Carrington; great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Russell, Josephine and Desmond Looby; a devoted sister, Ethel McNeil (James McNeil); sister-in-law, Annie Graham; goddaughters, Sharon Moorehead (Tyrone Moorehead), Florence Robinson (Charles Robinson) and Frenchy Bogier; beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, mentees and friends.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2019 at St. Peter’s Church and World Outreach Center, 3683 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.  Bishop James C. Hash, Sr., will officiate.
