GREENSBORO – John Davis Graves, Sr., 97, affectionately called "Chick" passed away October 2, 2019.

He was born August 5, 1922 to the late Percy Graves, Sr., and the late Rosa Poteat Graves in Caswell County, NC.

He was educated in the local public schools in and attended Caswell County Training School.

At a young age, he attended Graves Chapel Baptist Church, Yanceyville, NC.  He later attended Mount Bethel Baptist Church, Roxboro, where he served as a Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday School.  In the 90’s he attended New Rock Spring Christian Church, Creedmoor, NC.  For the past several years he was a member of New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Greensboro, NC where he sang in the Senior Choir.

Throughout his life, he was a farmer, worked at Sharpe Funeral Home, Roxboro, NC, Collins Akins Mills, Roxboro, NC and Barnhardt Furniture in Statesville, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his spouse, Ethel Mae Lawson; a son, John Davis Graves, Jr., and daughters, Berdinia Graves Hardy and Tyrris Graves Kings.

Survivors include daughters, Corinthins Vanzet Graves Pettiford (Greensboro, NC), Eleanor Graves Hinton, (Levitown, PA) and Patricia Pettiford (Durham, NC); sons, Angelo P. Graves (Rutherfordton, NC), Alonzo Graves (Durham, NC) and James Wesley Graves (Illinois); brothers, Hug Martin Graves (Pottstown, PA); sister, Alice Strawther (Pottstown, PA); a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 13, 2019 at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC.  The family visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m.  Reverend Dr. Cardes H. Brown, Jr., will deliver the eulogy.
