Ms. Thelma Louise Wright was born in Madison, Alabama on March 14, 1948 to the late James and Ethel Wright. She was the middle child of five children. Thelma Wright was a true trailblazer, exploring drag racing and a career in mechanics. She came to North Carolina from Louisville, Kentucky with the company Lorillard to excel in her career.
During this time, she earned several awards for her hard work and dedication to the company. While working, Ms. Wright followed her love of helping and educating people, starting The Wright Focus, which operated in the Carson Stout community, helping raise awareness about healthy living, job skills, and tutoring for the youth. During this time, she always worked with the NC Harm Reduction Coalition to balance the scale of the African American community affected by the needle exchange. Thelma was never afraid to go into the communities and pull her people out of harmful cycles.
After retiring from Lorillard, she wanted to be a role model for those around her, so she studied criminal justice and earned a bachelor's from Guilford College in 2013. Because of her passion for learning, Thelma was able to travel the world from Amsterdam to Ghana.
Thelma has left a significant imprint all over the world and will be truly missed. She is preceded in death by both her parents and brother Wille Wright. She is survived by her children Bryan (Charlotte) Wright, Gwendolyn (Sydney) Branch, Telora Thatch, Anthony (Melody) Thatch, sisters Elizabeth (John) Mark, Regina (Anderson) Ayers, and Marilyn (Charlie) Holman.
Her grandchildren Martise' Hassell, Del'Quan Hassell Darryl Smith, Shnika Branch, Donavan Smith, Orlando Branch, Temeka Thatch, Johnathan Thatch, Samuel Kalu; a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews will cherish her memory through honoring her love for educating and helping others.
