JULIAN – Rev. Walter E. Puryear, Jr., 84, passed away Saturday, October 16, 2021 at his residence.
He was a native of Richmond, VA and was born on November 11, 1936.
For many years, he served on the board of directors with the Mt. Hope Fire Department.
He served as a deacon with Wayside Baptist Church in New York before relocating to North Carolina where he served as an ordained reverend with Wadsworth Congregational Church in Whitsett, NC.
He was a collector of fine art, antique furniture and vintage cars.
Survivors include spouse, Denise Brown-Puryear; daughter, Sandra Puryear; son, Kevin Puryear (Cynthia); sisters, Ruth P. Jones and Geraldine Sexton; grandchildren, Devin Puryear, Kevin Puryear, Jr., and Katherine Puryear; special friends, Valerie Horton and John Fenner as well as Deacon Milford Marshall, Brian Lewis, Minister Melvin Dick, Terrell Augustine and countless others he mentored.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 11 a.m. from the New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC. The viewing and family visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, 3901 Forest Lawn Dr., Greensboro, NC.
The repast will be held immediately following at Mt Hope Fire Department, 6651 Holts Store Road, Julian, NC.
