Reverend Dr. Theodore Anthony Spearman

April 22, 1951 ~ July 19, 2022 (age 71) 71 Years Old

Obituary

Reverend Dr. T. Anthony Spearman transitioned from this earthly life on July 19, 2022. He was born to the late Theodore and Bessie Spearman in Rye, New York on April 22, 1951, the second of three children.

In 1995 Spearman was ordained a Deacon in the NY Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Two years later, he was ordained an Elder under the leadership of Bishop George Washington Carver Walker at Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church in White Plains, NY.  After relocating to North Carolina, he was called to the pastorate at Moore’s Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Salisbury, NC, Clinton Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church in Hickory, NC and later, pastor of St. Phillip A.M.E. Zion Church in Greensboro, NC. Most recently, The Spearman’s were members of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church of Greensboro, NC where they faithfully served under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Daran H. Mitchell.

In 2017 Dr. Spearman was elected President of the NC NAACP Conference of Branches. He was active in many organizations on his quest to make the lives of others better.  While at the University of Detroit, he became a proud member of Omega Psi Phi, Incorporated, the first fraternal organization founded at a historically black college/university. This brotherhood reflected his own principles of manhood, scholarship, and perseverance. Ted was rarely seen without wearing his most favored purple Omega baseball cap. It was his badge of honor.

In addition to serving as the former President of the North Carolina NAACP Conference of Branches, Spearman made an impact on the lives of others in many other organizations and capacities. Among them are: President of the North Carolina Council of Churches; a member of the Guilford County Board of Elections; a Servant Leader of the Guilford County Political Action Committee; member of Saint John’s Lodge #12 F&AM (PHA) and Greensboro Consistory #106; Justice Coalition USA; a champion for the LGBTQ community; a critic of criminal justice discrepancies; voting rights advocate; Coordinator for the Economic and Political Empowerment of the Piedmont Episcopal District (A.M.E. Zion Church).

He was preceded in death by his parents. Those who remain to cherish loving memories are his beloved wife, Janice Spearman; three children, Sonjon Brunson, Damany Collins (Yhana), and Dr. Anthony Spearman (Ebony); mother-in-law, Lennye Edward; two granddaughters, Morgan Spearman (Pa Pa’s little princess) and LeYhana Silva; four grandsons, Brandon Brunson, Damany Collins, Dakotah Collins and Damin Collins; one great grandson, Ryder Silva; two sisters, Diane Anderson (Ray) and Cynthia Spearman-Hall; a host of social justice leaders and advocates around the world.
