KERNERSVILLE - Ethel Ellis Cobb (Maxine Day), 84, departed her earthly journey on May 21, 2024.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 11 a.m. at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC. The family visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Ethel Lee Evans Ellis began her physical journey on September 25, 1939.
She was born to the Reverend James Alfred and Ada Evan Ellis in Greensboro, NC., where she spent most of her years. Ethel’s father was a minister, so she was baptized at an early age, and raised in a Christian home. She learned to exemplify the love of Christ along with keeping ties with a church family, no matter where life would lead her. She loved the Lord, her children, and her family.
She was a very precocious and strong-minded young girl, that knew early on what she wanted to do, and that was sing and entertain. All of her children and grandchildren have some of that fairy dust! Maxine started entertaining at Dudley High School as the lead Majorette. She was a natural comedian. Her mother was a talented singer and orator. It was no surprise that Maxine had the chops and oratory skills to succeed in entertainment. You only had to see her perform to know the joy she felt in wanting others to enjoy her shows. She traveled with the Chitlin Circuit performing alongside talents like Joe Tex, Ike and Tina Turner, James Brown, and her own band, Guitar Kimber & The Untouchables.
Anyone who encountered her was captivated by her bright and warm spirit. Her effervescent spirit will be sorely missed.
Immediate family who preceded her in death: husband, David Cobb; parents, Reverend James A. Ellis, and Ada Evans Ellis; sisters, Maggie, Savannah, Virginia, Charlotte, Ada, Edna, Angeleter, Essie, and Pearl; and two brothers.
Loved ones left to cherish her memory are her son, Reginald Johnson of Greensboro, NC; daughters, Sharon Wiley (Harry) of Kernersville, NC, and Caroline Aiken of Reidsville, NC, ten grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
