Christine Crutchfield Allen was born on June 20, 1937, in Chatham County, North Carolina, to the late Robert Crutchfield and Kellar Siler Crutchfield.
Early in her life, Christine moved with her family to Sedalia, North Carolina. She and her siblings attended St. John AME Church in Gibsonville. During the school year, Christine was a resident at the North Carolina School for the Blind in Raleigh.
As a young woman, Christine moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where she married Archie Allen. Together, Christine and Archie worked for many years at Industries of the Blind. After spending many happy years together, Archie passed away in 1999.
Despite her disability, Christine was known for being one of the most gracious, cheerful, and sharp-minded people in the room. She had many passions in life. She enjoyed listening to professional baseball games, along with other sports. She loved old-school soul music and often sang gospel songs. Until her health declined, Christine eagerly participated in various recreational activities at her nursing home.
Christine lived a life embodying the virtues described in Colossians 3:12: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” These qualities were always on full display in her life.
In addition to her husband and parents, Christine was preceded in death by six brothers: Robert, Graham, Charlie, Weldon, and Richard Crutchfield, and Clifton Degraffinried, and four sisters: Cadelia Young, Lillian Jenkins, Barbara Blackmon, and Pauline Pages.
She leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Joyce Parker of Greensboro; one stepbrother, Washington Summers of Greensboro; one brother-in-law, Thomas Blackmon of Greensboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
