Betty Jo Poole Mckinney, 81, died peacefully on October 23, 2023 with her daughter by her side.

Betty was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. She was the only child born to the union of the late Eugene A. Poole and Wilma Y. Anderson. 

She was raised in Greensboro and attended Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Catholic School and Notre Dame Catholic High School where she graduated in 1960.  She then attended Guilford Technical Institute and NC A&T State University. Betty worked in nursing at Wesley Long and retired in 2005 from Private Duty Nursing. She later retired a second time in 2012 from Greensboro News & Record where she worked part-time for 30 years.

She married Vancie "David" Mckinney, her life companion and friend.  She had four children, Robert, Wilma, Anthony, and Christopher. She was committed to her children, parents, and grandparents. Betty was a devout catholic and was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church, formerly Our Lady of Miraculous Medal, as an infant and remained a dedicated member all her life. She spent her life and her career serving others. Betty was a great storyteller. She enjoyed singing to her family and she kept everyone around her laughing. Her hobbies were traveling, cooking, reading, shopping, crossword puzzles, going to casinos, and spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband David and her son Christoper L. McKinney. 

She left to live with Jesus but her love and memory will always live in the hearts of her children, Robert E. Poole, Wilma A. Poole and David A. McKinney; grandchildren, D'Andre J. Poole, Davida Watkins, and Robert Duehring; 8 great-grandchildren; paternal half-brothers, Michael and Carlton James; paternal half-sister, Carla James Davis; first cousin, Carole Hicks; a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will begin Monday, October 30, 2023 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Funeral Mass at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1414 Gorrell Street, Greensboro, NC.

Interment will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. 

Public viewing Sunday, October 29, 2023 from 12 p.m. - 5 p.m. at Serenity Funeral Home, 1024 Homeland Avenue, Greensboro, NC.
