WHITSETT – Dr. Jerry Bennett Sr., 77, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Magee Mississippi on June 29, 1942 to the late Clifton and Annie Smith Bennett.

He was educated in the Simpson County School District.  After graduating from high school, he enrolled at Tougaloo College where he received a bachelor’s degree.  He also attended Iowa State University where he received his master’s degree and earned his Ph.D.  He later taught at the university.

For 25 years, he was an Associate Professor of Biology at North Carolina A&T State University.  He will always be remembered for his soft-spoken nature, and wonderful sense of humor, as well as his intellectual talents, integrity and strong convictions.  He was a productive and supportive of member of key committees within the department.  Dr. Bennett was also an excellent mentor for undergraduate and graduate students pursing research.  As a mentor he maintained his commitment to excellence, and this was reflected in his student’s thesis and other scientific reports.  Dr. Bennett will be remembered for being the first faculty member at NC A&T to participate in a biological research study with the NASA space program.  He had an experiment schedule on the Challenger, the NASA space shuttle that also carried Ron McNair on his last space mission.

He was a member at New Light Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

In his spare time, he enjoyed spending time with his family and was a professional photographer.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Robert Earl Bennett and James Clifton Bennett.

Survivors include beloved spouse, Reverend Shirlene Bennett; children, Jerry Bennett, Jr., Cheri Bennett, Pastor Daryl (Shonda), William (Bridgett), and Demar (Shana); grandchildren, Samiah, Nadia and Joshua; brother, Ralph Bennett, Sr.; a host of relatives and many friends.

Public viewing will begin on Saturday, August 24, 2019 from 12 noon until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2019 at New Light Missionary Baptist Church, 1105 Willow Road, Greensboro, NC.  The family visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m.  Reverend Dr. Cardes H. Brown, Jr. will deliver the eulogy.

Interment will be held at 12 noon Monday, August 26, 2019 at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N. O’henry Blvd. Greensboro, NC.

To the Bennett Family,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your wonderful family as we mourn the loss of our beloved Dr. Jerry Bennett, Sr. (Deacon). We know that God will grace us with peace and comfort in the days ahead.

Our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ has always been so strong. The Bible reminds us that "Blessed are those that mourn for they shall be comforted." We pray that this will be especially true for you as you mourn your loss.

We pray that God will give you the strength to see you through this sad and difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all. Deacon Bennett will be greatly missed by both New Light Missionary Baptist Church and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Biology Department.
