GREENSBORO – William Tyrone Hairston Sr. was affectionately known by all as “Sportie” was born in Bluefield, West “By God” Virginia, to the late Donald Cole and Virginia Hairston on February 19, 1947. He was the fourth of his three siblings. At an early age William enjoyed spending time with friends and family as the life of the party. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age, being baptized at Mount Zion Baptist in Bluefield. William was an avid believer in God and prayed before every single meal up until the end of his journey on earth. He enjoyed playing basketball and softball at Park Central High School where he became known as “Sportie”. After graduation, William attended college at Bluefield State College for one year with the education department.

William met and married Sheila Sinkford in 1967. To this union were born six children, three boys and three girls. William traveled extensively throughout Connecticut, New York, Ohio, and Virginia training press operators in the comics department. He enjoyed this work because it allowed him the opportunity to travel and support his family with an honest dollar. William moved to North Carolina and shifted trades, becoming a maintenance technician for Guilford County Schools working throughout the Piedmont Triad. William met Angela Stevenson during this time and married in 1996, to this union was born one girl. William worked for Guilford County Schools up until 2005 when he retired early due to a workplace accident. Upon his recovery, William made a stringent effort to continue to travel visiting family and taking vacations. During his free time, “Sportie”, enjoyed fishing, growing his garden, spending time with friends and family, and taking road trips.

William was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, but he was everybody’s Uncle “Sportie”. He was loved by many and he will be greatly missed. William was preceded in death by his two sisters, Barbara Jean and Anne Teresa Hairston, his youngest son, Ahmad Rashad Hairston, and his oldest grandson, Anthony Navell Hairston.

“Sportie” leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Angela D. Hairston of Greensboro, N.C., his brother Richard M. Hairston Sr. (Delores) Greenbelt, M.D., seven children, William T. Hairston Jr. (Penny) of Fredericksburg, V.A., Mrs. Veronica E. Hairston-Goode (Floyd) of Richmond, V.A., Fannie L. Hairston of Hanover, V.A., James M. Hairston of Fredericksburg, V.A., Lisa D. William Tyrone Hairston Sr. was freed from his earthly agony and pain on Friday June 21, 2019 at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC after a lengthy illness.
