Dr. Leon Emandus Petty, 95, passed away Tuesday evening, January 22, 2019 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. 

A native of New Castle, DE, he was the son of the late William Edward Petty and Hester Bungy Petty.  He graduated from Howard High School in Wilmington, DE, and received his undergraduate degree from Howard University in Washington DC.  Other professional degrees were received from Yeshiva University, New York, NY, University of Deleware, Newark, DE, Temple University, Philadelphia, PA, and he studied abroad.  Professionally, he was a Clinical Psychologist where he practiced at Mental Hygeine Clinic and St. Francis Hospital both in Wilmington, DE and Deleware State Hospital, New Castle, DE.  He was a Director of Alcoholic Services for the State of Deleware creating an alcohol institute and had a federal grant to treat drug addiction.  He also served as adjunct professor at the University of Deleware, Newark, DE. 

He was initiated in the Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  He was a life member of the Pi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and was active for over 75 years.  His committment to serve transcended the fraternity.  He served on the American Psychological Association, Board of Wilmington Friends School, Rotary Club - Paul Harris Fellow, Linus Pauling Institute, Sandhills Society, Scientific Research Honor Society, Sigma Xi... American Psychological Association, Sigma Xi, Private City Club and Private School Club.

He resided in Chadds Ford, PA for 42 years.  Upon retirement, he relocated to Pinehurst, NC for 17 years before settling in Greensboro, NC over two years ago.  He was affiliated with the Religious Society of Friends and became a member at New Garden Friends Meeting.

Survivors include his wife, Hester Stephens Petty; daughters, Lenora K. Petty and Lisa M. Petty; bothers, Conwell Petty, Eugene Petty and Frank Petty; sister, Patricia Petty; other relatives and friends. 

Interment was held Thursday, January 24, 2019 at New Garden Friends Cemetery, 801 New Garden Road, Greensboro at 12 Noon.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 2, 2019 at New Garden Freinds Meeting, 801 New Garden Road, Greensboro, at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made at American Friends Service Committee.

Mrs. Petty, Leonora and Lisa so sorry for your loss, Dr. Petty was a wonderful man and a lot of fun! I spoke to Lisa tonight, wish I could be there for the Memorial. I remember fondly you all and mine and Lisa's MBC days. Take came my thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Laura

It has been a great pleasure knowing and being a friend of Dr. Petty. His gentle demeanor was welcomed in any conversation we had. He enjoyed our company and certainly was a comfort during our parties and times together. He is missed by all in the Harlow Road area of Pinehurst.
